‘Hajj of Disavowal’: Leader Urges Muslim Unity in Face of Zionist Regime, Its Supporters

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution says this year’s Hajj pilgrimage should focus on disavowing the Israeli regime and its supporters for their genocidal war on Gaza.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the remarks while addressing hundreds of Iranian Hajj officials in Tehran on Monday.

This year’s Hajj rituals should be a disavowal of the Zionist criminal enemy of Muslims and its supporters, the Leader stated.

The act of disavowing the enemies of God is a cherished Abrahamic teaching, he said. “Since the inception of the [Islamic] Revolution, this principle has been a cornerstone of Hajj. However, this year’s Hajj holds a unique significance due to the huge and strange events in Gaza, which have starkly exposed the malevolent nature of the entity born out of Western civilization.”

The ongoing events in Gaza are “lasting indicators” in history. “The ruthless aggression of the Zionist rabid dog on one side, and the resistance of the people of Gaza on the other, will remain in history and show the path to humanity,” he said.

Their profound impact is evident in the reactions seen in non-Muslim societies and universities in America and other countries, he said, referring to the nationwide campus protests in the US where students are slamming the US support for the Israeli crimes.

The politico-religious ritual of disavowal of disbelievers (bar’aat min-al-mushrikeen), is rooted in Quranic verses, and is held every year near Mount Arafat, on the 9th day of the lunar Hijri month of Dhul Hajjah.

The Israeli regime has been launching aerial and ground strikes against the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, after Palestinian resistance groups carried out a surprise operation against the occupying entity in response to decades of oppression. The Israeli attacks have killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

The Quran unequivocally forbids alliance with oppressive enemies and the Israeli regime is the “perfect example” of hostility towards Muslims, with America being its accomplice, Ayatollah Khamenei said. “Without American support, would the Zionist regime have the audacity to inflict such brutality upon Muslim men, women, and children?”

“Those who murder Muslims, displace them, and their supporters are oppressors,” the Leader said, adding that the Quran states that anyone who befriends such oppressors becomes an oppressor themselves and is subject to the divine curse.

Both Iranian and non-Iranian pilgrims should strive to communicate the Quranic rationale supporting the Palestinian cause to the entire Islamic world, he said.

While the Islamic Republic has not and will not wait for others, the plight of the Palestinian people could be alleviated if the powerful nations and governments of the Islamic world extend their support and assistance, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Describing Hajj as a duty with multiple dimensions, both material and spiritual, he emphasizes that the innermost aspect of Hajj is the remembrance of God, who is the true source of life, determination, and the guiding force behind individual, social, and national decisions. This remembrance is the cornerstone of all stages and rituals of Hajj, he said.

Elsewhere, Ayatollah Khamenei said that during Hajj, one should pay attention to unique elements such as the Kaaba, Masjid al-Haram, and Tawaf and the pilgrimage of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) Mosque. He noted that these are experiences that cannot be found elsewhere, unlike markets and goods which are ubiquitous.

The social dimension of Hajj is highlighted by the unity and interaction among Muslims, he said. “God’s call for all people to gather at a specific place and time aims to foster familiarity among Muslims, encouraging collective thinking and decision-making so that the blessed and meaningful outcomes of Hajj can be garnered by the Islamic world and all of humanity.”

There is currently a “major gap” in the Islamic world when it comes to making joint decisions, Ayatollah Khamenei lamented.

The unity of Hajj necessitates the disregard of national, religious, and ethnic differences, he said. “The vast, uniform gathering of followers from all Islamic sects, and nationalities is a vivid demonstration of the socio-political aspect of Hajj.”

He noted that the need to overcome differences and divisive issues isn’t exclusive to Hajj as numerous verses of the Quran also underscore the importance of unity and empathy among Muslims.
